In line with the directives of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, to expand the establishment of a network of sustainable, green, and environmentally friendly mass transit systems to facilitate citizen movement and provide them with distinguished services, and in light of the Ministry of Transport's plan to implement several green mass transit projects in Alexandria, the second most populous governorate, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, witnessed the signing of the infrastructure contract for the Raml Tram Rehabilitation Project between the National Authority for Tunnels and the Arab Contractors-Hassan Allam Construction consortium. The contract was signed by Dr. Tarek Goueili, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels; Eng. El-Sayed El-Wazir, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Arab Contractors; and Hassan Allam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hassan Allam Construction. The Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport confirmed that the rehabilitation of the Raml tram line is part of the Ministry of Transport's plan to implement a number of green mass transit projects in Alexandria, the second most populated governorate. He expressed his happiness that two national Egyptian companies are implementing this project, which, after rehabilitation, will reach a length of 13.2 km and include 24 stations (5.7 km surface, 7.3 km elevated, and 276 meters underground). The project will start from Victoria Station and then extend westward, passing through the areas of San Stefano, Janklis, Al-Wizara, Rushdi, Mostafa Kamel, Sidi Gaber, Sporting, Ibrahimia, and Raml. Passenger transport services will also be exchanged with the Alexandria Metro's regional line at Victoria and Sidi Gaber stations. He pointed out that this project will reduce travel time from 60 minutes to 35 minutes, as a result of increasing the operating speed from 11 km/h to 21 km/h and reducing the headway time from (9) minutes to (3) minutes. It will also contribute to increasing passenger capacity from 4,700 passengers per hour per direction to 13,800 passengers per hour per direction, in addition to improving transportation services in Alexandria Governorate, ensuring smooth traffic flow and preserving the environment. He added that last June, a contract was signed with the Korean company Hyundai Rotem to manufacture and supply 30 tram units for the project, with design work currently underway for the moving units. It is worth noting that this signing comes just days after the signing of an agreement to localize and supply 21 metro train units, comprising 189 cars, for the Alexandria Metro project, the first phase of which is currently under construction, extending 21.7 km from Abu Qir Railway Station to Misr Station in Alexandria. This is part of the Ministry of Transport's comprehensive plan to establish a sustainable, green, and environmentally friendly mass transportation network in Alexandria.
