Development of the first metro line Helwan - New Marg


  1. Project objective


    The systems of the first line should be in line with the modern trains that will be supplied to the line. Reducing congestion on passenger platforms. Increasing the operating efficiency of the first metro line. Improving the level of safety procedures at stations. Reducing maintenance costs, which will have a positive impact on the economy and reduce operating costs.

  2. Supply of (55) trains for the first line, including maintenance


    In November 2021, a contract was signed for the design, manufacture, testing, preparation for service, supply of (55) trains for the first line, supply of workshop equipment, and provision of 8 years of maintenance for the trains with the French company Alstom for a period of 75 months. The first modern train of the 55-train deal arrived on May 12, 2025.

  3. Rehabilitation and maintenance of 23 trains for Line 1


    In November 2021, a contract was signed with the Spanish company CAF to refurbish 23 trains (originally supplied by the Japanese company Mitsubishi between 1994 and 2004) for a period of 65 months, in addition to a 24-month warranty for each train. Furthermore, on September 17, 2025, a contract was signed with the same company for the maintenance of these trains after their modernization for a period of 120 months from the start of implementation.

    On 8/28/2024, a contract was signed to develop signaling, communications, central control, track works, electromechanical works, and electrical power works with an alliance led by Colas Rail, and to improve the design frequency to (2.5 minutes instead of 4.5 minutes) to accommodate the steady increase in the number of passengers using the metro lines. - On 10/31/2022, a contract was signed with the consultant Systra to carry out the consulting work and supervise the implementation. -- The second train arrived at the Kotsika workshop on 8/1/2026
