The Minister of Transport witnesses the departure of the second tunnel boring machine from El-Masaa station towards Giza station as part of the implementation of the first phase of Metro Line 4.
In line with the directives of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, regarding the necessity of continuous monitoring of the construction work on Metro Line 4, the rapid completion of this vital project, adherence to the highest standards of quality and safety, and compliance with the established timelines, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, along with Major General Tarek Goweily, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, his deputy, Engineer Ibrahim Bakheet, Major General Sherif Leil, Assistant Minister, and other leaders of the National Authority for Tunnels, witnessed the departure of the second tunnel boring machine from El-Masaa station towards Giza station as part of the implementation of the first phase of Metro Line 4. The Minister listened to a briefing from the project manager on the progress of the project. For the first time in Egypt, six tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are being used simultaneously to construct the tunnels for this phase. The first section of the phase, "Hadaeq El Ashgar Station - El Mesaha Station" (one tunnel in each direction), is being constructed using four TBMs (two in each direction). The first machine has completed its work up to the Pyramids Station, the second is currently working from the Grand Egyptian Museum Station to the Pyramids Station, the third is working up to Madkour Station, and the fourth has completed its work up to El Mesaha Square Station. Work is currently underway on the second section of the phase, "El Mesaha Station - El Fustat Station," using two TBMs. The first machine has begun work from El Fustat Station towards King Saleh Station, and the second machine is being prepared to begin drilling from El Fustat Station towards King Saleh Station. The Minister of Transport stated that the construction of the first phase of Metro Line 4 represents a monumental undertaking being carried out in Egypt. He added that the first phase of the line, spanning 19 km and including 17 stations (16 of which are underground), is currently under construction. +1 surface line), which extends from the west of the Ring Road on the outskirts of 6th of October City, passing through the Grand Egyptian Museum station, then Shooting Square, then Al-Haram Street until Giza station, where it intersects with Metro Line 2. It then continues to intersect with Metro Line 1 at King Saleh station, ending at Fustat station. He added that the construction and electromechanical works are being carried out by specialized Egyptian national contracting companies (Arab Contractors, Orascom Construction, Concord, Petrojet, and Hassan Allam Construction). The systems, track, and workshop works are being implemented by a consortium of Mitsubishi and Orascom. The rolling stock for the project are being supplied by the Japanese company Mitsubishi, which is manufacturing and supplying 23 trains. The first train was delivered in May 2026.
He pointed out that the fourth line will be implemented in four phases. The second phase (Fustat – New Cairo), the third phase (Hadaeq Al-Ashgar – Al-Hosary Square), and the fourth phase (New Cairo – Capital Airport) are currently under study. The first phase of the line will provide passenger interchange with Metro Line 2. The Giza station, and the first metro line at King Saleh station, will be connected in phase two. The second phase will also connect with the currently studied sixth metro line at Sayeda Aisha station and with the East Nile monorail at Hisham Barakat station. The third phase will connect with the West Nile monorail at Al-Hosary station, and the fourth phase will connect with the LRT light rail (El-Salam – 10th of Ramadan) at the New Administrative Capital Airport station, and with the East Nile monorail at El-Fattah El-Aleem station.
He pointed out the strategic importance of the fourth metro line in connecting the governorates of Cairo and Giza. Furthermore, it is the first line to connect 6th of October City and New Cairo to the metro network, providing passenger transport to densely populated areas (Haram, Faisal, Omraniya, Giza, Nasr City, Al-Azhar University, New Cairo), as well as connecting new urban areas to the electric traction network. It also serves the tourism sector by passing by numerous tourist attractions (the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and Historic Cairo), thus serving as a "tourism and development link." It will also connect history (The Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum) and the future (New Cairo and the New Capital). It is expected to transport 2 million passengers daily upon completion.
