This visit is part of the ongoing monitoring of national projects implemented by the Egyptian state to develop a sustainable, green mass transit system and provide modern and safe transportation services to citizens across the country. The Prime Minister emphasized the significant importance of this project, highlighting its qualitative addition to the mass transit system in Alexandria. He noted its pivotal role in improving the level of service provided to citizens and supporting the state's efforts to transition to modern and environmentally friendly mass transit. He stressed the need to expedite the implementation process and adhere to the highest international quality standards. Upon arrival, the Prime Minister inspected the station facilities and ascended to the platform via elevator. He listened to a briefing from Minister of Transport, Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, who reviewed the progress of this phase of the project. The Minister explained that it extends from Abu Qir Station to Alexandria's Misr Station, a distance of 22 kilometers, and that 47% of the work has been completed. He noted that the project includes 6.5 kilometers of surface track from Misr Station to just before El-Zaheria Station, followed by a 15.5-kilometer elevated track to Abu Qir Station. The Minister of Transport further explained that this phase comprises 20 stations (6 surface and 14 elevated), in addition to 21 trains with a total of 189 carriages, which will be manufactured by the Egyptian National Railway Industries Company (NERIC). Following this, the inspection tour of the project began at El-Mandara Station and concluded at Sidi Bishr Station, passing through El-Asafra and Miami Stations. The Prime Minister and his entourage, accompanied by the Minister of Transport, boarded a carriage specifically designed for use on the Abu Qir Metro project's tracks. To inspect the construction work, track work, and civil works for the stations, which are proceeding according to the project schedule and in accordance with the highest quality and safety standards. The team, led by Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, reviewed the plans for the second and third phases of the project. He noted that the total length of the project across its three phases will be 80 kilometers. The second phase will extend from El-Zaheria to Kilometer 21 in the Agami area, covering 31 kilometers and including 21 stations. The third phase will extend from Kilometer 21 to Borg El Arab Airport, covering 27 kilometers and including 10 stations. This will facilitate a direct connection between Alexandria and Borg El Arab Airport, enabling passenger transfers with Line 1 of the high-speed electric rail network. Furthermore, the possibility of extending the line to New Abu Qir City in the future is being studied to serve the growing population along this route. During the tour, Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir emphasized that the implementation of this project is part of the Ministry of Transport's comprehensive plan to develop the transportation system in Alexandria. This plan focuses on upgrading roads, bridges, and rail transport, introducing electric traction systems, and developing river and maritime transport. He added that the Alexandria Metro project represents a significant leap forward in the sustainable green mass transit system in Alexandria Governorate. It will contribute to achieving targeted economic and social development, and enhance safety and security by eliminating unauthorized level crossings and intersections with traffic, in addition to accommodating the growing number of passengers. The Minister explained that the project will also contribute to reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise, thus protecting the environment and public health. Furthermore, it will alleviate traffic congestion and encourage more citizens to use public transportation instead of private cars, aligning with the state's plan to expand sustainable green mass transit across all governorates of the Republic, including Alexandria. The minister also noted that, in parallel with the metro project, another project of great importance to the public transportation system is underway: the rehabilitation and development of the Raml tram. This project will contribute to developing urban transport in Alexandria, transforming it into a green, environmentally friendly mode of transport and providing a fast, modern, and safe means of transportation that offers the highest levels of service to the public. Minister of Transport, Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, pointed out that the project is expected to contribute to increasing the maximum capacity from 2,850 passengers/hour/direction to 60,000 passengers/hour/direction, reducing the journey time from 50 to 25 minutes, increasing the operating speed from 25 kilometers/hour to 100 kilometers/hour, and reducing the headway from 10 minutes to two and a half minutes. He added that the project will achieve integration with various other means of mass transportation, as it will exchange passenger transport services with the Cairo/Alexandria railway line at Misr and Sidi Gaber stations, with the Raml tram at Sidi Gaber and Victoria stations, and with the Rashid railway line at Maamoura station. It will also be integrated in the future with the first line of the high-speed electric train at Borg El Arab station.
