Inspection Tour by the Minister of Transport of the West Nile Monorail Project Sectors to Follow Up on Implementation Rates and Trial Operation, Emphasizing Adherence to the Timeline
Within the framework of the directives of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, to expand the establishment of a network of green, sustainable, clean, and environmentally friendly mass transit systems, and to complete the West Nile Monorail Project in accordance with the planned schedule, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, conducted an inspection tour. He was accompanied by Eng. Wagdy Radwan, Deputy Minister for Electric Traction and Railways; Major General Tarek Goueili, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels; and Eng. Ibrahim Bekhit, Deputy Chairman of the Authority.
The tour covered the West Nile Monorail Project, which extends from New October Station to Wadi El-Nile Station, spanning 43.8 km and comprising 13 stations: (New October – Canadian International College – El-Sadat – October 6 University – Engineers Syndicate – Mall of Egypt – Sheikh Zayed City – Alexandria Road – Mansouria – Mariouteya – Ring Road – Bashteel – Wadi El-Nile), in addition to the Control and Command Center and the main depot. The project is being implemented by a consortium of companies (Alstom – Arab Contractors).
During the tour, the Minister inspected various sectors of the project, following up on the progress rates of implementation, electromechanical works, station finishing works, and the timeline for trial operation. He also inspected the Control and Command Center building at the monorail depot, which spans approximately 80 feddans (336,000 m²) and includes 13 buildings. The Minister reviewed the completion rates of civil works at the center and the progress in its various buildings. Furthermore, he inspected the trains, noting that 30 trains have been delivered out of the total planned 30 trains, comprising a total of 120 carriages, with each train consisting of 4 cars. The Minister also reviewed the commercial utilization of the project through advertisements placed on monorail columns and stations, as part of the Ministry of Transport’s comprehensive plan for optimal commercial exploitation of all projects to generate financial returns that contribute to providing distinguished services to passengers and ensuring the sustainability of these projects.
The Minister stressed the necessity of working around the clock and exerting maximum effort to complete all project sectors according to the specified timetable, particularly given the importance of the project in serving major urban expansions in 6th of October City, such as social housing projects, development projects south of October, southern expansions, and the industrial zone in 6th of October. The project is integrated with Line 3 of the Cairo Metro at Wadi El-Nile Station; with the October Station of the first line of the electric high-speed rail network (Ain Sokhna – Alexandria – Marsa Matrouh) at the Engineers Syndicate Monorail Station in 6th of October; with the railway network at Upper Egypt Railway Station in Bashteel (Giza) via Bashteel Monorail Station; and in the future with Phase 3 of Metro Line 4 at October 6 University Station.
He pointed out that this project represents a major leap forward in mass transit systems, characterized by being fast, modern, and safe, reducing fuel consumption, lowering environmental pollution rates, alleviating traffic congestion on main roads and axes, and encouraging passengers to use it instead of private cars to reduce fuel consumption.
The monorail is implemented on an elevated track, with the possibility of operating in narrow and congested streets with small horizontal curves, without occupying large street spaces, with relatively short implementation periods and high passenger capacity.
It is worth noting that the total length of the monorail project (East/West Nile) is approximately 100 km, with 35 stations. The carrying capacity of each of the two monorail lines is 600,000 passengers per day. Each monorail train consists of 4 cars, with plans to increase to 8 cars in the future as population density increases in the served areas.
The project serves numerous schools and universities (Canadian International College – October 6 University – Nile University), as well as mosques such as (Al-Hosary Mosque – Police Mosque), hospitals (Dar Al Fouad – Souad Kafafi – 6th of October Hospital), major commercial hubs and malls (Mall of Egypt – Mall of Arabia – Hyper One – Cityscape), and many new residential communities such as social housing projects, development projects south of October, and southern expansions. It also serves the industrial zone in 6th of October, the banking district, key transportation corridors (Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road – Mansouria محور – Mariouteya محور – Ring Road), and numerous clubs (Zamalek Club – Engineers Syndicate Club – 6th of October Club – Al Ahly Club).
The project has contributed to providing approximately 12,000 direct job opportunities for the design and implementation of civil and electromechanical works, and around 8,000 indirect job opportunities in industries and services related to the project, in addition to future employment opportunities in management and operation
