Minister of Transport Inspects King El-Saleh Station on Phase One of Metro Line 4 Project Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, accompanied by Major General Tarek Goueily, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), along with NAT leadership and officials of the executing companies, conducted an inspection tour of Phase One of Metro Line 4 (October / New Cairo). The line links 6th of October City with El-Fustat Station in Old Cairo and is being implemented by Egyptian companies under the supervision of an international consultancy office in accordance with the highest technical, safety, and security standards. The tour commenced with the Minister’s inspection of King El-Saleh Station, where he reviewed the technical procedures and emergency plans implemented and approved by the Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Authority for Tunnels, in cooperation with the project consultant and the executing company. These measures were taken in response to the minor subsidence that occurred at the corner of Building No. (30), adjacent to the station, as a result of a sudden rupture in a main water pipeline in the station’s vicinity. Consequently, residents of the affected building and the neighboring building were evacuated and temporarily accommodated in nearby hotels in El-Manial as a precautionary measure, pending completion of remediation works and soil injection around the affected building to secure it and the station structure, prevent any movement or settlement of other buildings in the area, and fully verify the structural integrity of both buildings. The Minister emphasized the necessity of providing him with periodic comprehensive technical reports on the results of inspections and measurements. He noted that the Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Authority for Tunnels, together with the executing company, remains committed to the highest standards of safety and quality, affirming that the safety of citizens and property constitutes a top priority. He further stressed the continuation of full coordination with all concerned entities, particularly Cairo Governorate and the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Wastewater, to undertake any required measures in due course. The Minister also reviewed the progress of the remaining construction works under Phase One at the stations, as well as the advancement of tunnel excavation works for the two tunnels in the first section of Phase One (one tunnel in each direction), executed using four Tunnel Boring Machines (two in each direction). The first TBM has reached the Grand Egyptian Museum Station, the second has reached El-Remaya Station, the third is en route to Madkour Station, and the fourth is heading toward El-Talbiya Station. He further reviewed the ongoing works related to the assembly of two additional TBMs in the second section of Phase One, where the first machine is currently being lowered at El-Fustat Station and is scheduled to commence excavation of the first tunnel in mid-March toward King El-Saleh Station. The second TBM will begin excavation of the second tunnel in mid-April from the same El-Fustat Station toward King El-Saleh Station. It is worth noting that Phase One of the ongoing project extends for 19 km and comprises 17 stations (16 underground and 1 surface station). Studies are currently underway for the implementation of Phase Two (El-Fustat – New Cairo), extending 26.9 km and comprising 21 stations (6 elevated and 15 underground). The alignment runs underground and intersects with Metro Line 6 at El-Sayeda Aisha Station, terminating at the major overhaul workshop site for Line 4, located north of the intersection of the Ring Road and the Cairo/Suez Road at the end of Phase Two. Studies are also in progress for Phase Three (Hadayek El-Ashgar – El-Hosary Square), extending 16.3 km with 10 stations to serve the population density along its route and provide interchange with the West Nile Monorail at El-Hosary Station. Furthermore, studies are underway for Phase Four (New Cairo – Capital Airport), extending 38.7 km with 8 stations, reaching the New Administrative Capital and providing interchange with the Light Rail Transit (Adly Mansour – 10th of Ramadan – New Administrative Capital) at Capital Airport Station. Upon full completion, the line is expected to transport approximately 1.5 million passengers per day.
