Signing a memorandum of understanding regarding advisory services for the preparation of preliminary studies for the first line extension project (Helwan - New Marg) to Shebin El Qanater between the National Authority for Tunnels and the Spanish Consulting Office
Lieutenant General Eng. Kamel Al-Wazir - Minister of Transport witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding regarding advisory services for the preparation of studies for the project to extend the first line of the Greater Cairo Metro (Al-Marj Al-Jadida - Shebeen Al-Qanater) with a length of about 19 km and 14 stations to accommodate the increasing transport demands along this path. Signed by the National Authority for Tunnels Major General / Sherif Hassan Lail - Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Authority for Tunnels, and by the consulting office Mr.: Antonio Rodriguez Castellanos - Regional Director for the Middle East, West and Central Asia - TYPSA.
The minister stated that this memorandum is a statement of mutual intentions between the National Authority for Tunnels and the Spanish Consulting Office to prepare advisory services for the project, "transportation studies, economic feasibility, preliminary assessment of the environmental and social impact, and a study of the impact of the extension of the first line on operating characteristics, and preliminary technical specifications documents." ..) stressing that the signing of this memorandum at the Climate Conference aims to expand the use of rail transport by electric traction "the metro" to provide a safe, modern and environmentally friendly means of transportation, as emissions polluting the environment will be reduced. It should be noted that the July 23 railway will be canceled / Shebeen Al-Qanater and replacing it with the metro in an isolated path to avoid accidents. Integration will also take place with other means of public and private transportation to reduce traffic jams in the main axes and streets in the extension areas, indicating that the advisory office (TYPSA) will submit the documents required to request a grant that is not received from the Spanish government under the umbrella of FIEM, with the support of the Authority, and accordingly, the agreement will start with terms acceptable to both parties, provided that the time period for the memorandum of understanding is 6 months from the date of signing
It is worth noting that the first metro line is the backbone of the metro network, and it is the first metro line that was implemented in the Middle East and Africa region and has been operating for nearly 40 years. It is also the highest density among metro lines in the world, as it transports about one million passengers per day.
It should be noted that the political leadership attaches utmost importance to the development of operating lines to improve the service provided to the Egyptian citizen, to preserve time and effort, and to reduce the queuing time to 2.5 minutes to accommodate the steady increase in the number of passengers and reduce congestion on the sidewalks, as well as to preserve assets and reduce maintenance costs, as works are currently being offered. A contract was also signed with Alstom to manufacture and supply 55 trains for the first line, in addition to a contract with the Spanish company CAF, in cooperation with the Japanese company Mitsubishi, to rehabilitate 23 trains that were previously supplied about 25 years ago.
