Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, held a meeting yesterday; To follow up on the implementation steps of the Alexandria metro project "Abu Qir - Egypt Station", in the presence of Eng. Kamel El Wazir, Minister of Transport, Major General Mohamed El Sherif, Governor of Alexandria, Major General Ahmed El Azazi, Vice President of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces for the Northern Region, and Dr. Essam Wali, President of the National Authority for Tunnels Eng. El-Sayed Metwally, Head of the Internal and External Land Transport Regulatory Authority, and Eng. Alaa Mostafa, Assistant Minister of Transport for the Technical Office. At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister indicated that it was agreed on the importance of implementing the Alexandria metro project "Abu Qir - Egypt Station", and the need to quickly start its implementation, adding that the goal of today's meeting is to discuss the necessary measures to speed up the start of the project, and provide the necessary alternative to compensate The volume of transport that takes place through the current train, especially that we need to quickly finish this project with the large volume of development underway in Alexandria. The Minister of Transport indicated that the development of the Abu Qir metro project aims to achieve the safe operation of the line after development, to accommodate the increasing transport movement, and to contribute to reducing traffic jams in Alexandria Governorate, which helps reduce fuel consumption as operation depends on clean electric energy. He explained that the project will contribute to increasing the maximum passenger capacity from 2,850 passengers/hour/direction to 60,000 passengers/hour/way (in the first phase from Abu Qir to Egypt Station), and will help reduce the journey time from 50 minutes to 25 minutes, and increase the speed of Operating from 25 km/h to 80 km/h, achieving shorter towing time from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes. The minister continued: The current (Abu Qir/Alexandria) railway extends along the Mediterranean coast from east to west, passing through the city center. The number of daily passengers using this line is estimated at about 71,000, and the route of the line is parallel to the (Cairo/Alexandria) railway for a distance 5.7 km, as this distance includes 3 stations (Sidi Gaber, Hadra and Alexandria). The current length of the line is 21.7 km, the number of stations is 16 surface stations, and the average distance between stations is 1450 meters. He pointed out that, based on the directive of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, to start implementing the Alexandria metro project, coordination was made between the advisory office and the various authorities, and a number of meetings were held to determine the expected effects as a result of the Abu Qir train stopping during the time period specified for the implementation of the project and to determine the available alternatives. And the traffic paths that can be worked through to reduce the effects resulting during the stopping period, and the Land Transport Regulatory Authority was assigned to prepare a study for the proposed alternative means of transportation. Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir added that it is planned to start the work of removing the current line, and that coordination is underway to implement the regular works of the project (bridges - stations). For his part, Major General Mohamed El Sherif, Governor of Alexandria, indicated that the citizens of Alexandria are awaiting the development work that will take place in the Alexandria metro project "Abu Qir - Egypt Station", which will transport thousands of passengers daily, saying: We are working in coordination with the Ministry of Transport to provide the alternative necessary to transport citizens during The period of project implementation, whether through mass transportation or through alternative routes. Major General Muhammad Al-Sharif added: We are ready, along with all the executive leaders in the governorate, to make all the required efforts to implement the project, while at the same time making sure to provide a suitable alternative for transporting citizens. In the same context, Major General Ahmed Al-Azzazi, Vice President of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces for the Northern Region, confirmed that this project will greatly serve the Alexandria Governorate, and we are strongly supportive of its success, and we will assist in everything that is asked of us with the aim of implementing it as soon as possible. During the meeting, it was agreed that the Ministry of Transport would contract with mass transit companies, as one of the alternative solutions, and that coordination would be made with traffic regarding alternative routes.
