Alexandria Metro (Abu Qir - Misr Station)
Alexandria city is considered one of the most important cities after the Greater Cairo area and one of the most important commercial, industrial and touristic centers, and due to its high population, the necessity of a constructional expansion and improvement for transportation services increases due to the overload on that transportation services over their designed capacities such as (overcrowding of the surface transportation – the high traffic – citizens exhaustion – wasting time and money – the pollution and noise and its effect on the environment), one of the solutions to solve these problems is upgrading the train line of (Abu Qir – Misr station) which hasn’t been upgraded since decades.

Transportation study procedures
French Development Agency AFD and European Commission have facilitated the investment in the neighbor countries that are in European Union, this is done by grant of making the French consultant EGIS Rail prepare the strategic plan (2032) for urban transportation in Alexandria governorate SUTMP during the period (2013-2015), the purpose of the study was to prepare the long run scenario for the urban transportation which is suitable for the urban planning of Alexandria city until 2023.
The study showed that improving the public transportation in Alexandria is the only solution for the traffic problems in Alexandria because the city has only two long roads which connect the east of the city with its center (El kornish road and Horia road) and only one urban road connects the center of the city with its west (Max street and its extension)
The study recommended executing (4) transportation projects with high priority according to the strategic plan of urban transportation up to year 2023 which are as follows:
Upgrading, electrifying and improving Abu Qir/ Alexandria railway to transport 61000 passenger/ hour/direction.
Bus rapid transit project along El kornish which will transport 5000 passenger/hour/direction, and it is in execution stage by the governorate.
Raml Tram Rehabilitation project from Victoria station to El Manshia to transport 13800 passenger/hour/direction.
BRT Bus rapid transit or the LRT Light Rail Train on Mehwar El Mahmodia to transport 10000 passenger/hour/direction.

Alexandria Metro Phase1 (Abu Qir - Misr Station)
The project’s route extends for a length of 21.7 km from Abu Qir railway station to Misr station in Alexandria, “superficially with a length of 6.5 km from Misr station to al-Dhahirah station, then upper with a length of 14.2 km until after Toson station and then return superficially to Abu Qir station with a length of 1 km.” It included a number of (20) stations, where (5) new stations were added, namely: Miami - Mohamed Naguib - Kafr Abdo - Sporting - Bab Sharq. The commercial speed is 80 km/h.
The President of the Republic directed in the meeting held on 25/4/2019 to start implementing the Alexandria metro according to the studies prepared by the French consultative office Sistra in 1999, with a speedy proposal for implementation after presenting a study of the importance of implementing the project in light of the request for transportation on the track, which amounts to 60 thousand Passenger / hour / direction (Phase1- Abu Qir / Misr station).
